The breed is famous for its friendliness and love for people. Have a look at the Golden when he’s barking at the door. Do you see that tale waiving asking “Will you play with me?” So if you need a watchdog better start looking for another breed.

Space and Exercises
The Goldens are famous not only for great personality but also for being very active. Of course, your Golden will become less active as he ages, but normally he needs to exercise a lot! And of course it requires your time. Don’t forget, Golden Retriever was originally bred as a hunting dog so exercises are absolutely necessary for his physical and mental health. The best conditions for your Golden are a medium or large-sized yard. But it’s also acceptable to keep Golden in the apartment if you give him enough opportunity to exercise outdoors.

The Golden retriever breed is strong, medium to large built with a broad skull. The appearance of retrievers is most likely similar with each other. They have medium to large dark brown eyes, scissors-like teeth, black or brownish black nose, and relatively short ears hanging down close to its ears. Primarily, the retriever has a feathery double coated skin which protects them from different kinds of weather.

Normally the undercoats, the tail and back of the legs have thick hairs. Trimming is not necessary since shedding comes naturally when the hot season comes. However, frequent brushing is essential to eliminate too much shedding during the summer.

Proper grooming must also be conspicuously observed by the golden retriever dog breeders when raising these kinds of dogs. You may use a quality firm bristle brush in combing them paying careful attention to its dense undercoat. Daily bathing of your golden retriever is not necessary, but dry shampooing should be done regularly.

How to Teach Your Puppy Or Dog to Get Into the Swimming Pool in Six Steps

Published: Aug 14th, 2010 | Author: marbolec Add Comment

Most, but not all dogs can swim. The best time to encourage a dog into a swimming pool is when they are young, and have little, or no negative experiences with water.

The experience of swimming in a pool should be a positive experience with positive associations. With some dogs, they take to it immediately. With others, it takes time and patience. Unlike the ocean, a lake or pond, a swimming pool has walls, and your dog may sense they will be trapped.

Never force or throw your dog into the swimming pool. It is always better when the dog thinks getting into the pool is their idea!

Six Steps to success:

· Step 1
Calmly leash your dog. Talking in a cheerful and confident tone of voice, casually lead them to the pool. Do not drag them! If they balk, unleash them and try again at another time.

· Step 2
Without tugging on the leash, encourage him/her toward the pool, with your voice. Each time they step forward, reward them with praise and treats. They should associate by walking with you toward the pool, good things such as getting praised and receiving treats happen! Consider this the goal for the day. This has been a positive experience with positive associations.

Published: Aug 11th, 2010 | Author: marbolec Add Comment

Many dogs are inclined to beg for table scraps but conscientious owners will not give them human food that they are not sure is safe. Many human foods contain elements that the digestive system of a dog is simply not equipped to handle. Blueberries are one human food that many dogs enjoy from time to time, but pet owners need to know whether it is wise to give them to their pet.

Blueberries are actually a very healthy treat for dogs to have on occasion. They are a great source of many important nutrients that dogs may not get from the other foods they eat. They are a much healthier alternative to the processed treats available for dogs on the shelves of grocery stores and pet stores.

When feeding blueberries to a dog, it is important that they only consume fresh fruit. Pet owners should not add any sugar to the fruit before feeding it to the dog or add any preservatives in order to store them for longer. The dog’s digestive system may not be able to process these things and it could cause the animal to become seriously ill.

How to Wash Your Dog Properly

Even if you have the most easy-care dog in the world, she’ll still require some attention to be paid to her appearance once in a while so it’s worth spending a little bit of time learning the best strategies for straightforward, unstressed grooming. Dogs were seen as something that lived in the yard (usually in a dusty, hard-floored dog house), ate whatever was put in their bowls, and existed as a sometime-playmate for the household’s kids. Today, we have a tendency to care for our dogs more, and view them more as members of the household than the Thing in the Yard.

Ever since this rise in the estimation of our beloved pooches became widespread, grooming has been increasingly recognized as a crucial aspect of your dog’s regular health-care.

Our dogs can’t let us know where it stings, but taking just a little amount of time every now and then to wash them over ourselves can save lots of grief over time. The trick is getting your dog to put up with (and even enjoy. Something that many owners lack experience in is the best way to wash their dogs. Dry-grooming (brushing and ‘buffing ‘ the coat) appears to present a small problem for the general public; the rot has a tendency to set in when water is introduced to the mix. First off, the most crucial thing you can do is make your dog happy with the grooming process. As your young dog or dog becomes acclimatized to the feeling of being rubbed and handled, she’ll slowly come to like it.

Dog Training at Home - Stop Dog From Barking

Published: Aug 9th, 2010 | Author: marbolec Add Comment

Having a dog in your life should provide you with great joy and companionship - not an extra burden or an endless source of frustration. Your time with your pets is meant to provide you with peace and happiness.

At some point in time all of us dog owners need to administer some dog behavior modification or training. Many behavior problems (such as barking, biting and digging) stem from a lack of communication, or mis-communication between you and your dog. Because we haven’t clearly and consistently taught him what we expect, your dog’s behavior is less than ideal. The proper obedience training at an early age is the most effective way to correct any current behavior problems, and prevent any future problems.

For Dog Training to Be Effective We Must:

• Keep it simple and stay calm and in control
• Set boundaries for acceptable behavior and stick to them
• Be consistent: Be clear on what is unacceptable behavior - every time
• Be clear that you are always the leader in your owner-dog relationship.
• Make it clear to him what is acceptable behavior - every time.
• Do not inadvertently reward bad behavior

Herding Dog Training

The benefits to herding dog training are very plentiful. Fencing for your pastures can be very expensive and requires consistent maintenance. Training a dog or a group of dogs for herding takes time and effort but not only is highly useful, it is rewarding as well.

Some dogs have a certain amount of herding dog training bread into them. This makes the training process easier but it still requires time and effort. Research on herding dog breeds will go a long ways. Once you have found a good pup you should start to familiarize the dog with the mechanics of sheep farming.

Simply taking the dog with you to the fields is a good start. If an older dog has never been around larger animals they can sometimes be frighted. Dogs which are frighted may lash out and become unruly to train. If you happen to be trying to train an older dog who is afraid at first you will need to do a bit more work to correct this problem.

Is Your Dog at Risk For Potential Kidney Failure? The Importance of a Quality Dog Food Diet

Published: Jul 26th, 2010 | Author: marbolec Add Comment

Your dog’s potential for developing kidney failure or other serious illnesses is directly related to a quality dog food diet or the absence of one. With ongoing occurrences of dog food recalls, sick pets and unfortunately the deaths of many animals, the importance of feeding a quality dog food diet becomes clearer.

What exactly is kidney failure? The kidneys are organs that filter and clean the blood. They also return salts to the bloodstream and remove excess water from your dog’s urine. When your dog’s kidneys fail, they lose the ability to remove waste products from the blood. This leads to a buildup of toxins and the onset of kidney failure symptoms.

Symptoms can appear suddenly or gradually become apparent over a few months. Most incidents of of kidney failure occur over time and are the result of an ongoing disease but a sudden onset of kidney failure is more likely caused by a severe infectious disease or a poisoning.
