Baby alligators have been popular as exotic pets. They can be bought in special pet stores and souvenir shops. Some states have made rules against taking care of alligators.

But if you are still keen on getting one as pet, read on the things below so you’ll know what to do or what to expect.

1. You need a special license to buy an alligator. In Florida for example, this is being practiced. There are laws regulating alligators that are taken as pets. People who wish to buy an alligator shouldn’t only be licensed. They should also know exactly what they are doing.

2. Taking an alligator from its natural habitat isn’t allowed in some States. Before you go to the wild and get an alligator, check the local laws of the state first. There are states that don’t allow it entirely. And some even control the feeding and harassing of alligators.

3. Alligators require a large habitat. An alligator can grow to as long as 12 feet, which is about average. Some species can even grow longer than that. That being the case, you have to make an alligator pen for them, maybe in your backyard, as big as thrice its size.

Happy Holidays With Your Dog

Published: Dec 16th, 2008 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

The holiday season can be a fun and hectic time for the whole family, and just like young children, your pets will feel the effects of all the excitement. Cooking, shopping, relatives visiting and traveling will disrupt your pets comfortable routine. He will need to have his place, whether it be a crate or a room out of the way, where he can feel safe and secure. Remember, not all your guests will like dogs and your dog may not like all your guests! If your dog is going to be able to mingle with family and friends, ask them not to feed your dog any treats. Rich, spicy food, chocolate and fatty foods, can all cause gastric upset.

All the pretty ornaments and decorations can be very tempting for your dog, either to play with, chew on or eat. Keep live greens and plants off the floor and out of reach. It may be a good idea to tie your tree down so it cannot be tipped over. One year we had a 13 foot tall tree and while we were out, our Lab knocked it over…what a mess! Use unbreakable ornaments on the lower branches of your tree and avoid using tinsel or garland where your dog can reach it. Of course the best solution is to train your dog to stay away from the tree, but it may just be too tempting for even the most angelic of pooches.

If you have children opening presents with lots of parts, make sure they keep all the pieces together and off the floor. There are any number of toys or even socks and gloves that your dog can ingest. The last thing you want to do on your holiday is make a trip to the emergency vet. Another potential danger is your dog escaping out the door as guests are arriving or leaving. Be aware if your pup is likely to make a run for it and keep him safely secured.

A wise trainer once said” if you want to be successful training dogs, you must think like a dog, but you must teach the dog to think like a human”. The same holds true with puppies. Puppies are baby dogs, but they differ from grown dogs just as children differ from grown ups.

Unlike grown dogs, their teaching periods must be kept brief, The trainer must always be aware of the puppy mentality and gear his or her efforts to capitalizing on the shorter attention span of the pup.

Before your puppy can be trained successfully, he needs consistency established in his daily routine to enhance his training ability and to have a healthy life. Set a schedule for his daily feeding, grooming , playing, and schooling activities.

Make sure your pup is fed at the same times everyday. Once you have found a brand of puppy food that agrees with him, stick to the same brand. While choosing a brand of pet food, look for one that has rich sources of protein like chicken, and meat protein.

Dispelling the Myths About Invisible Fences, No Bark Collars and Dog Training Shock Collars

Published: Dec 16th, 2008 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

The use of electronic training devices has become increasingly widespread. In 2006 pet owners worldwide purchased more than 500,000 remote training collars, over 1,000,000 containment systems, and almost 900,000 bark collars.

Why the popularity? These training systems have become much more affordable, and pet owners are finding them to be a safe, effective means for controlling the various behaviors that they find unacceptable.

As sales of these products increase, so do the not so favorable opinions about them — that they make dogs aggressive, that there is a greater chance of failure than success when using them, that the shock they deliver is painful, that they will result in significant injury to your pet.

These can all be classified as “myths”, since there is very little hard data available to prove or disprove them. However, recent studies are providing results that allow for a more reasoned analysis of this technology.

Basic Pet Training Rules

Published: Dec 16th, 2008 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Before we actually start puppy training or even thinking about it, it is important that we get ourselves in the right frame of mind. If we do this and know where we are going, we will be much less likely to violate certain training rules that may hinder or prevent us from attaining our goals. Additionally, we want to prevent ourselves from doing anything that may adversely affect the relationship we hope to develop with our puppy. In our article on Housebreaking, we alluded to the fact that everything we do in training can result in positive or negative effects on how our puppy sees us. We start out with the idea of making our dog more like we want him to be, but if we are not careful our pet may end up seeing us as something he does not want us to be.

Rule 1 - Always Be Consistent - The First Rule of general training is Always Be Consistent. There should be no exceptions here if you want the training to go as rapidly and as easily as possible. This relates to your actions and words. From the very start you need to decide exactly what you are trying to teach or control and how you will do it. If you are going to use a certain word or phrase as part of a command or in conjunction with a certain point you are trying to make, always say the exact same thing in the same tone of voice. This is important for all the members of a household or anyone else working with the puppy. Everyone that is involved in the training should know and use the same expression. As an example, let us think in terms of the “Come” command. It obviously will not make things go faster if you use the word “Come,” your spouse uses the word “Here,” and one of the children uses “Yo, Boy.” All of this simply confuses the dog. Remember, we are trying to train him in our language; we cannot expect the puppy to be multilingual at 8 weeks of age.

Choosing a Dog Crate

Published: Dec 16th, 2008 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Dogs, like their wild cousins, wolves, are naturally den animals. If introduced correctly, wire or plastic dog crates provide a sense of security - a refuge where your dog can go whenever he needs to get away from the high activity level of your home, or just wants some peace and quiet.

Reasons to purchase a Dog Crate

House training: It is a dog’s natural inclination toward dens that makes a dog crate so useful to house train puppies. Since puppies will not normally soil an appropriately-sized ‘den,’ crates are extremely effective for helping puppies gain control over their bladders. They help reduce the number of accidents you will have to clean up, and cut in half the time it takes to teach puppies where they are supposed to relieve themselves. When it comes to house training a new puppy, there is nothing that makes the training go faster or easier than a puppy crate. Placed in a crate that is just the size they need to lay down and no more, house training is often completed in 10 to 14 days.

Protecting the puppy and your house: Dog Crates are useful during the puppy period as a way to protect your home from the mad dashes that knock over the plants and furniture, chewing teeth, and generally uncontrollable behavior. Dog Cages can keep puppies from forming bad habits when they are not under a watchful eye. As an adult, the crate will be just as useful. If puppies are introduced to a crate correctly, they will not resent them, and most will actually consider them their private hideaway spot.

Electronic Dog Training

Published: Dec 16th, 2008 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Once people become familiar with electronic training products and use them properly, they find the methodology is proven, efficient, economical, and ethical.

The type of training in which an electronic aid is used is critically important, for it will influence the type of product and methods used. Is the equipment being used to teach a new obedience command, correct some common misbehavior, or is it being used to reinforce another electronic training methodology?

Factors affecting success Before an electronic training tool is used, it is strongly suggested that the entire training situation be re-examined. There are three major considerations in this re-evaluation:

* Does the owner know what he is doing, does he understand the training process, and can he apply proper methodology to a specific situation?

* Is the owner training the dog properly, does he have a plan for this specific misbehavior, and is he executing that plan appropriately and correctly?

* Is the dog trainable? Is the dog in question stubborn, set in his ways, or unintelligent?
