The Irish Setter

Published: Jan 5th, 2009 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Irish Setters are the oldest of the setter group and they originate in Ireland. The Irish Red Setter Club was formed in Dublin in 1882, prompted by the breeding programme of The Earl of Enniskellen, who developed the signature solid red coat. However, major show winners in the late 1800s, still had some markings of white or black.

n the 1940s the breed was nearly decimated by the eye disease Progressive Retinal Atrophy, better known as PRA. This disease is a non sex-linked genetic illness that causes night blindness. Thankfully, it is now known how to DNA test to identify carriers and thus, eliminate them from a breeding programme. And the breed has recovered and the incidence of PRA has dropped significantly.

The Irish Setter is a highly intelligent dog and early obedience training is essential in order to get this dog to come back if it ever gets off the lead. Being a hunter, although an easily distracted one, it will follow a scent all over if not trained to come back to its owner. With patience and kindness, The Irish Setter is easy to train and can even compete in obedience trials. It is a sensitive breed though and will not respond well to harsh correction. This breed matures slowly, both physically and mentally and should never be pushed too far too fast. They are can be very, stubborn and independent.

Lack of Exercise

A dog who has a lot of energy stored up needs to release it somewhere, and oftentimes the resulting behavior is digging in the yard. Dogs are very physical creatures who need exercise to remain focused and healthy, and they will become destructive if left with too much pent up energy. A simple daily walk and some fetch can calm most dogs, though high energy level dogs like Border Collies often need more intense exercise and play.

Boredom

Your dog is not only a physical creature; he also has quite a mind. Dogs are smart, and if we don’t exercise their brains they become destructive. Play games with your dog regularly, and leave his toys in the backyard to provide acceptable entertainment. Puzzle toys, like the Kong, with treats inside are especially fun and engaging for your dog.

Get the Right Box

Dog litter training has actually spawned a plethora of boxes meant just for your dog. There are even boxes that have fake grass on top and a catch bin underneath for waste, though these are fairly expensive. If you don’t have enough to buy a grass box, a large litter box (like a cat’s) will suffice, and do the job of protecting your floors just as well.

Reward Proper Elimination

With litter training positive reinforcement is far more productive than punishment. If you scold your puppy too much he may think you hate to see him eliminate, and start hiding it all over the house. Instead, pat and rub your puppy for eliminating inside the box on a consistent basis and he will begin to associate good feelings with the box.

The Benefits of Obedience Training Your Dog

Published: Jan 5th, 2009 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

I have owned dogs all of my life and they are truly man’s best friend. However, sometimes they can get on your nerves with barking, chewing, and other annoying bad habits and this can hurt your relationship with your dog. That is why it is important to make sure that your dog is well trained and behaved and one of the best ways to achieve this goal is through obedience training.

Obedience training is one of the best decisions that you can make for your dog or puppy. It will not solve all behavior problems, but it will give you a solid base to build on and solve many of your issues that you are dealing with. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog and this is extremely important because it lets your dog know what you want them to do. You can teach your dog to ’stay’ and not run out the door and to ’sit’ and not jump on visitors and to stay ‘off’ and not jump or chew on furniture.

Without proper training, dogs will behave like the animals they are and this is not good for you or your home. They will mess in your house, destroy your furniture and other belongings, bark excessively, dig holes in your lawn, fight with other dogs and even bite you or other people. Most all behavior problems are normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place and are directed toward the wrong thing. The key to solving or preventing these problems is to train your dog to vent his natural behavior at acceptable outlets in his domestic setting.
