Ways To Locate Pet Grooming Supplies

Published: Feb 14th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

You know you have been putting it off for some time, but your pet needs more than a walk in the park to play pet games and some grooming is in order. However, many pet owners find that they lack the time or money to spend on a professional pet groomer; needless to say they end up not receiving the service they expected in the first place. With the beginning of the new millennium more and more pet owners are inclined to take care of their pets by themselves. Anyone who wishes to embark themselves in the task of grooming their pet immediately asks himself where to get the grooming supplies. Not just the flimsy plastic brushes, but the sturdy, good quality scissors, trimmers and brushes. Not only will they want to know where to get them, but some guidance is necessary as to the choices to be made. Every species and breed will require different type of tools. This is because of the wide variety of animal coats, thickness and length variations and other factors unique to each creature.

Probably the easiest road to dog grooming utensils for your particular pet can be obtained through your veterinarian. He will not only have quality tools, but will also be able to provide proper guidance as to the tools you need. However, if you are on a tight budget, this may not be the best way to go. The quality and advice provided by the veterinarian comes at a price. He will usually have high grade clippers and trimmers, and choose the proper one for you, but these items carry a hefty price tag. Perhaps you can explain to your veterinarian your needs, in order to get the proper recommendations and buy your tools elsewhere.

Reasons Why Finding A Pet Groomer Can Become Difficult

Published: Feb 14th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Grooming your pet properly is an essential part of owning a pet. Keeping your pet under proper standards of hygiene will result in a cat or dog that is emotionally and physically healthy. Certain activities in the grooming process, such as cutting hair and trimming the nails do not only help your pet look better, but also provide for a healthier lifestyle. It is a common scenario these days to find that pet owners are often feeling lazy to pick up the brush, or are often postponing the grooming process and only find time to play pet games with their cat or dog. Leaving this task for later will not only make your pet look like a creature from a zombie movie, but could also be the source of all sorts of illnesses and infections. Finding the right person to groom your pet can be rather difficult. Perhaps, somebody who can do the job to your liking is way outside your means. While on the other hand, a cheap groomer may end up not doing the job as he should, and even abuse the animal by not knowing how to handle him properly.

Finding the right groomer is a trial and error process. The first step when trying someone out for the first time is to check his references, verify that this person has actually received some training at handling animals. When your pet is returned to you, make sure to examine him carefully. Not only should you confirm that he has been bathed and trimmed, but also look for signs of improper handling in the neck and legs. Signs to watch out for include red spots in the skin caused by the use of a razor too close to the skin, or bruises in the neck and legs as a result of holding the animal too tight. Another sign of malpractice that borders a little bit in the extreme would be blood present in the paws caused by trimming the nails too short and hurting the cuticle.

Treating Kennel Cough – How Serious Is It And Should I Worry

Published: Feb 13th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

The first time a person might hear about Kennel Cough, as I did, was when I had traveled to China and had to leave my three Min Pins in my veterinarians care. Since he knew their history we figured it shouldn’t be a problem. Then came the question; Have they ever been treated for Kennel Cough?

Since I never heard of it, this seemed like an odd question. Also since he has been their veterinarian for many years why wouldn’t he know? I found out that when dogs and cats come in close contact to other pets such as in a boarding kennel they can contract this disease. Now I was really worried and quite honestly upset.

I take good care of my pet Min Pins and why should I have to worry that someone else’s dog or cat will infect them with a disease I know nothing about? The answer to my problem wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. Since dogs and cats can develop this infectious disease it’s simply a matter of inoculating them against the virus/bacteria before they become exposed to it in close quarter situations.

Is Getting A Dog Right For You?

Published: Feb 13th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Most of the time when you ask people how and why they chose a particular dog or breed, it turns out that it was just random choice. Maybe they saw a puppy in a pet store that was just too cute to pass up. Or maybe their kids have been begging them for a while about getting a dog and they finally decided to go get one. Or maybe the dog down the street had puppies and they are talked in to taking one. Even though these reasons can be great ways to bring a great dog into someone’s life, it can also spell disaster for both the people and the dog they brought home.

There is nothing better than coming home from a long day to a tail wagging, lovable dog who is excited to see you! But before you decide to bring one of these furry friends into your life, you need to understand they are a huge responsibility to take on! They are completely dependent on you for everything from food to exercise to training. They also don’t take the day off.

Many people don’t understand the requirements of care to keep a dog happy and healthy. They didn’t realize just how much exercise or training was needed to keep their dog healthy and well behaved. After a while they start to wonder why they even wanted to have a dog in the first place.

You have just arrived home from the breeder with your wonderful new puppy. It is the goal of every new or experienced dog owner to have the best dog on the block. The question is how you get there; the answer is patient and consistent training. Basic dog training can be divided into two areas, teaching commands and behavioral correction.

Dog treats can be a tasty addition when teaching your dog basic commands, however behavioral correction requires the owner to understand the concept of alpha male and being the pack leader in your dog’s life. Dog treats have little to no place in corrective behavior, as your dog needs to understand his/ her position in the pack.

Dog Obedience - 1 Reason You Dog May Not Come When You Call

If you’re having trouble with the “come” command, here is one possible reason why your dog may not come when you call him. This is a common mistake that many owners make without realizing it.

This mistakes is that if you use the “come” command in both positive and negative situations. It causes the dog to be confused and will sometimes put it in tha back of their head that the word means they are in trouble.

You may think your dog is dumb because he doesn’t come when you call - but he may be very smart! He may just be confused as to what the command actually means. Remember that he only knows “dog language” and you have to teach him yours!

I’m going to give you an example using a short story:

You just got your new dog “Duke” and you start to train him right away. You think that you h ave successfully trained him the basic commands and you are very proud of both you and Duke.

Choosing The Right Dog Breed For You And Your Family

Published: Feb 10th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

It’s important to really think about what type of dog breed you want to buy before jumping into it. Dogs are a huge responsibility that require a lot of care and attention for you and your family. Dogs also need socialization so they don’t get aggressive and over protective. Obedience training is also needed so they don’t acquire bad behaviors.

There are many considerations to think about before buying a dog. Remember to consider the breed you buy carefully!

- Size: Size can be a huge consideration. It could be depending on where you live or maybe just a preference. If you live in an apartment or in the city, having a small dog would probably suit your lifestyle better. Large dogs need more energy then smaller sized dogs. Also, if you have children then some dogs are more fragile then other dogs. Young children may want to rough play with your dog and it could seriously injury him.

- Energy Level: Different breeds of dogs have different energy levels. Some are more active and need more exercise. If you have a small house or a house with no yard, having a breed with a high energy level may cause some problems.

Queen City Petsitting - Protect Your Pet During The Cold Weather

Published: Feb 10th, 2010 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

With the recent burst of cold weather, pets and their owners may not be properly prepared to endure the low temperatures. There are a large number of pets that spend the majority of their time indoors, and don’t have tolerance for extremely cold weather. These are the types of animals that should not be unattended when the temperature gets below freezing.

Not all animals have thick coats and tough footpads, so Queen City Petsitting has provided a few tips for pet owners to consider when dealing with cold weather:

  • Purchase one or two sweaters or coats for dogs with very short coats. These dogs include: Boxers, Boston Terriers, Greyhounds, Dobermans, and Chihuahuas. Smaller dogs with short coats are especially vulnerable to cold.
  • Place boots on your dog regardless of coat length. Do not ignore your dog if he or she whines, stops walking, or frequently lifts up their paws – they are trying to inform you that their feet are uncomfortably cold.
  • Provide shelter, a bed, and any insulating material that traps warm air for pets that spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Cut back a bit on what you feed your indoor pet during the winter.
  • If your cat likes to spend time outside, provide a warm place for him or her to go.
