No Charges Following Rottweiler Attack

Published: Apr 18th, 2008 | Author: danny Add Comment

No charges are to be brought in the unfortunate case of a young girl being bitten by the family dog, who had been rehomed to the family just the day before.

The BBC earlier reported that:

Sophie Willis was attacked by the Rottweiler, named Kaizer, at her home in Cardiff.

Her father, Rob Willis, had bought Kaizer from Cardiff Council’s dogs’ home, on the city’s Penarth Road, after it was picked up as a stray.

The dog has now been destroyed. A council spokesman said the dog had had a good temperament.

He added it had been walked by both adults and children during its two months at the home.

Is the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of GB About to Do the Right Thing?

Following our previous coverage of the Rhodesian Ridgeback club of Great Britain advocating the culling of healthy, ridgeless puppies

Breed Club Recommends Healthy Puppies Be Killed

RSPCA Condemns Deplorable Puppy Culling Advice from Breed Club

Kennel Club deeply concerned by culling of healthy Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies

it has not gone unnoticed that the club’s code of ethics page has changed from saying this:

Any mismarked puppies shall be described as such and sold as “not to be shown or bred from.” This shall be reflected in the price. Ridgeless puppies shall be culled at birth ;

to now say this:

Let’s hope this review concludes that it is not, in any meaning of the word, ‘ethical’ to advocate the killing of healthy puppies.

Teen MySpace Animal Abuser Goes to Court

Published: Apr 18th, 2008 | Author: danny Add Comment

In today’s daily charge of the morons brigade, we’ve discovered what can only be the team captain of the Pathetic-Simpletons club.

Here’s a teen who thinks spending time abusing animals ‘live’ on his MySpace page is a cooler thing to be doing than skateboarding, X-boxing or even partaking in good old fashioned teen behaviour like getting drunk off the fumes of a can of White Lightning.

A quick message to Joseph Deiss, “You’ll never get a girlfriend, you’ll never have any friends who aren’t equally as mentally redundant as you and you’ll undoubtedly succumb to a shorter than anticipated stay on planet earth when you inevitably try and make your toast in the bathtub, you utter, utter pilchard.

Is fat important to my dog’s health and, if so, what is the best kind?

Published: Apr 18th, 2008 | Author: danny Add Comment

Question: Is fat important to my dog’s health and, if so, what is the best kind?

Answer:
Dietary fat is the most concentrated source of energy for the dog. It also provides essential fatty acids and aids in nutrient utilization and transportation. Fat is involved in cell integrity and metabolic regulation. So, yes, fat is important to your dog’s overall health!

Saturated fat is found primarily in animal sources while polyunsaturated fat is found mostly in plant sources. Saturated fat provides greater energy for the dog than carbohydrates. In fact, as long as the diet provides sufficient glucose precursors (amino acids, fats, etc.), dietary carbohydrates are not needed for growth and maintenance.

Ferret Harnesses – Where Can I Find Them???

Published: Apr 18th, 2008 | Author: danny Add Comment

I have a ferret and want to be able to take it for walks. But I don’t have a way to keep a hold of her. A dog leash won’t work and I don’t think they have cat leashes. Do they make ferret harnesses? Because they’d slip right out of a collar, I think this is the only option for me. Where can I get ferret harnesses? I’ve found places online that discuss various types of harnesses for such small pets, but where can I purchase them. I need help!!!!

Even Ferrets Need Beds

Published: Apr 18th, 2008 | Author: danny Add Comment

I’m a proud owner of two ferrets. They’re adorable; but if there’s one thing I learned about ferrets it’s they sleep all day. I’ve seen great ferret beds online that are hammock like and offer a cozy sleeping option for my ferrets, but I’m not sure if they’re the best option. Are they good for my ferret’s health? Does it support their backs (is that even a concern)? Is straw a better alternative? I just don’t know. I just have a towel now that they seem to enjoy, but I don’t think it’s the most enjoyable option for them. A little help would be much appreciated.

Will Smith Movie Gives Cause for German Shepherd Concerns

Dogs have always been subject to ‘fashion’ trends but nothing, it would appear, can boost the demand for a particular type of dog more than a Hollywood movie.

Where Jack Nicholson’s ‘As Good as it Gets’ raised the profile of the Griffon Bruxelles, Will Smith’s latest blockbuster ‘I am legend’ has seen demand increase for German Shepherds, prompting concern from some animal welfare organisations charged with the task of picking up the pieces when dogs are abandoned.

The Story of ‘Bones’
written by Daniel S. Wall. All rights reserved.

“Sometimes it is personal.”

With dozens of dogs and cats in the shelter at any time, and with many of them leaving (thankfully) for other homes within a day or two, the majority of animals at the shelter do not leave much of an impression. Okay, sometimes we get a dog with a voice so high pitched it hurts to be within 30’ whenever it yelps. There is the occasional cat big enough to generate oohs and awes from the staff. (I was going to say ‘big enough to eat a horse,” but we would not want anyone to get the wrong idea.) And every now and then you get a puppy or a kitten so damn cute, your heart melts just looking at the little critter. But even these precious novelties come and go.

And then there are cases like “Bones.”

Bones was brought to the Humane Society this September. Animal control had seized him and one other animal. The reason was painfully obvious. Both animals were starving. Bones was in especially bad shape at 25 pounds, which was no weight for a full grown pit bill terrier. Shelter staff was unsure that he would survive. The case would be turned over to a prosecutor for potential charges. But for shelter staff, the task at hand was to keep this poor creature alive.

Bones was first taken to the Flagstaff Animal Hospital where staff gave him a check up, ran blood-work, and devised a treatment program. He then spent 2 weeks in isolation with a high calorie diet and limited physical activity. Additional visits to the Vet were made as necessary.
