THREE FOOT KOI with a Dramatic Water Garden Bottom 60,000 Gallons with a Multi-Million Dollar View

Published: Aug 4th, 2009 | Author: marbolec Add Comment

Dale Price had no illusions that a 60,000 gallon pond would operate crystal clear with the “natural” biological filters proposed by local pond builders in the mid 1990’s.

Price knew that as the KOI fish grew he would be violating every pound per gallon rule in the KOI books. With his wife, a veterinarian, he embarked on a one year build and water treatment effort to have one of the most valuable KOI collections in the U.S. displayed in crystal clear water with unique flora on the bottom.

The pond is twelve feet deep, oval in shape with a complete water garden bottom. A small peninsula protrudes so he can ring his liberty bell to summon fish for feeding, often from the hand.

Keeping Cichlids Fish Rock

Published: Apr 19th, 2009 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Keeping the freshwater fish cichlids have been one of my favorite things. They are such interesting little creatures and I love watching them. I have a 50 gallon fish tank and 7 cichlids in there. I have had them for almost a year now. They are African cichlids and they breed like crazy. I have had a number of batches of fry. It is very fun to watch.

I never thought that keeping fish could be so cool. They just swim around in a small tank and come up and eat food when you feed them. But there is something about them that just makes you want to stop and stare at them for long periods of time. I have watched less TV in the last year because of my cichlid fish.

I do not know what my individual cichlids are called, but I have 2 yellow cichlids, 2 blue cichlid, 1 orange cichlid and two with multiple colors. I keep the fish tank really clean so they have a nice place to live.

A great way to begin planning for Koi carp ponds is to view how others of have successfully designed and built their ponds. Searching online is the fastest and easiest way to get started, as there is an endless resource of photos and information to be found there. Seeing how others have done things can spark wide imagination and creative ideas into how you would like your Koi pond to look, and the potential of how it could enhance the overall impression of your garden landscape. Decorations of plans, stones, statues, wooden ornaments and fixtures can have a dramatic and pleasant impact on the dynamics of your Koi garden. However, in regard to including any plants in your pond, be sure to take into consideration that Koi will eat certain plants as well as dig into the soil, which could lead to a potential messing of the pond water thus leading to more frequent cleaning and maintenance. There are plants that are suited well for Koi carp ponds, and covering the plant soil with stones or large gravel can alleviate much of this potential problem. Another great way to include plants in your pond development and keep them safe from your Koi is to put them in a floating island pond planter. Floating islands are great for decorating your Koi pond with beautiful plant life while at the same time providing needed shade and protection from predators for your Koi fish. Again, professional advice is golden.

Fish Tank Aquariums - Glass Or Acrylic?

Published: Apr 13th, 2009 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Traditionally virtually all fish tank aquariums were made of glass but in the last couple of years the advances in plastic technology spurred a new wave of acrylic tanks on the market. So, is an acrylic fish tank better than a glass one? Many old school fish keepers still swear by glass tanks, but the new generation is embracing acrylic tanks with open arms.

The one is not necessarily better or worse than the other, but they do have some important differences that you might want to keep in mind. Here are the 5 reasons why I like acrylic tank aquariums:

1. Scratching

Although glass is much harder and more difficult to scratch, the scratches are permanent. Acrylic on the other hand is easy to repair when it is scratched. Acrylic polishing kits are available in many places, and these can be used to remove scratches and make your tank good as new.

The True Story Of The Black Koi Carp Fish

Published: Mar 25th, 2009 | Author: ardhi Add Comment

Koi enthusiasts are aware of the great variety of colors and patterns associated with Koi Fish, and Black Koi are not much different to other Koi varieties outside of their coloring. Koi have been know for their incredible extended life span of up to two hundred years, but on average, with proper care and diet, they generally live between twenty-five to thirty-five years. If you have ever wondered how to distinguish the female from the male Koi, the one with the concave anal section is the male. Males Koi might also be recognized by a display of breeding spots or markings on the head. Black Koi fish, like all other Koi, spawn between spring and summer and can yield a result of as many as 1,000 eggs. Fry is the term used for baby Koi. Fry tend to begin emerging within four to seven days. This depends largely on water temperature. Then only after about three to twelve weeks of age do Fry begin to color.

These magnificent fish only came in a few color variations when the Japanese began breeding them from carp mutations. But throughout the years, with more breeding came more color variations and combinations of patterns, marking Koi Fish as a beautiful breed of fish indeed.
